Having performed over three thousand gigs in twenty four countries, releasing thirty records and seven books of poetry along the way, he pauses here to relate his life story, a tale of ranting verse, punk rock and his relationship with the ever changing, increasingly corporate minded politics of the last five decades. In additions to numerous memories of gigs, he describes his community's long-running fight to save their beloved football team and his devoted support for his mother as she became increasingly frail with Alzheimer's. Highlights are his fascinating account of touring East Germany before and after the Berlin Wall came down, and his accounts of neo Nazis storming anti-racist gigs and attacking people.

Things were a lot more intense in music, back in the 80s! I was less impressed by Attila's scathing views on the punk band, Crass, as he not only lays into them, but also their entire fan base and all the bands they inspired to set up.

I can understand his disapproval of Crass's pacifism, though the long rant he indulges in comes across as childish and undermines his credibility. I was also surprised by his negativity towards the live exports protesters in Shoreham Harbour in the s and his asking were they had been during "imports of scab coal". If he'd researched the issue a little, he'd have found that many people went along to their first ever protest during the much-publicised live exports port blockades and went on to get involved in a wide range of social justice and human rights issues.

I say this as somebody who did just that, who knows lots of others who did likewise! Basically, protest movements cross-pollinate and his ignorance of this lets him down a bit. These quibbles aside, this is well-written, an important social commentary and a very enjoyable read. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Heard Attilla on Steve Lamaq on 6 Music plugging this.

Some of his poems touched a chord so bought it. Throughly enjoyed it and recommend it. Paperback Verified Purchase Full of all the energy you'd expect from a "performance poet".

I did actually see him a couple of times and listened to him on the John Peel radio broadcasts. A great read full of some of the stuff you'd expect and plenty you wouldn't. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Soulless , clunky , repetitive , rambling and devoid of character or characters , bar one overbearing bigot. Credit though for to making a genuinely interesting life read like a Haines car manual. Paperback Verified Purchase great.
